Kathryn Lucinda Carey Dunmire, 90, passed away on July 19, 2022, in Orange City, FL.
Kathryn Dunmire was born in Tullahoma, Tennessee on June 17, 1932 to Joseph Leo Carey and Sylvia Lossing Carey.
Kathryn Carey graduated from Williston High School in Williston, Florida where she played basketball. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Library Science from Florida State University and later in life, a Masters of Education from Stetson University. She was an educator in Volusia Schools for 25 years, primarily as media specialist at Hillcrest Elementary, Campbell Middle, South Daytona Elementary, Horizon Elementary, and George Marks Elementary. She also was in charge of Educational Materials, including coordinating Volusia schools’ educational television channel for several years. In 1991 to 1992, while media specialist at Horizon Elementary, she was named Volusia Teacher of the Year.
Kathryn married Robert B. Dunmire, Jr. in Williston, Florida. They were married for 67 years and had three children: Dana Dunmire, Robert Dunmire, III, and Russell Dunmire.
Among many family members and friends, Kathryn is survived by: Dana Dunmire, daughter; Robert Dunmire, son; Clinton Carey and Charles Carey, brothers; Samantha Dunmire, Alexander Dunmire, Aaron Dunmire, Russell Carey Dunmire, Jr., Amelia Dunmire, grandchildren; and Ocean Dunmire, Evelyn Carey Dunmire, and Cove Dunmire, great grandchildren.
Kathryn is preceded in death by her husband Bob, son Russell Carey Dunmire, her father and mother and brother Wilmer “Bill” Carey.
Kathryn made a difference in the lives of children. She helped many students enjoy books and reading as a media specialist, and also enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She and Bob enjoyed camping with their children, and later in life enjoyed international travel. Having met Bob when they were students at Florida State University, they were Seminole fans, and when she and Bob retired to DeLand, they went to Stetson basketball, baseball, and football games. She also enjoyed her grandchildren, extended family gatherings, gardening, crafts, and designing unique cards and letters to send to friends and relatives.
The service for Kathryn Dunmire will be held on October 14 at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 724 N Woodland Boulevard, Deland, Florida.
